Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
