They're Repeating to America What They Did to Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and characteristic occasions – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. During the period of multiple weeks, the US president began displaying everyone his intentions for a lavish reception room twice the size than the White House and then began solo dismantling the eastern section to construct it.

He has done things countless times more severe – the present calculation of deaths from his cuts to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and this week research predicted his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have risked – truly, no other president would have conceived – independently wrecking major areas of the White House in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which maintain dealings with federal agencies.

We moved from 'the humble will receive the Earth' into 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'

As bewildering as it is to watch the president try to upend the old idea of democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there is one large group of Americans who should not find it entirely new. That is those of us – within elder demographics close to half – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.

We have witnessed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we grew up with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of affection into a figure of hate who endorses precisely the cruelties that he denounced in biblical teachings; this change developed at a slower pace, across decades rather than months, however it is still disturbing in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

So let me first describe the Christ from my childhood, because theoretically the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and since the fastest-growing cadre within America could have minimal awareness about him as they consider themselves non-believers or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value in biblical accounts.

It is decidedly definitely not the narrative of an authoritative monarch appearing; conversely, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in a garage, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to avoid covert authorities. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his teaching concerns compassion for others, particularly for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and housing. The Savior's reaction to violence is to offer the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a way to teach the aggressor; his crime policy is that if a person pilfers your coat you should give them your pullover as well.

The obvious and clear fact that the Savior in biblical accounts calls for a form of extreme compassion centered on the poor is what has always made Christianity somewhat of a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be restrained. During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestantism was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.

A Battle for the Best Among Us

So I have been inspired to observe the persistent defiance to Trump arise in this past year. It has provided substantial consolation to participate in developing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated voters to show up in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We shall require to maintain it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags during all protests and appeals to the finest aspects in US history.

We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you receive him and embrace them or refuse?

The nation is most protected, to put it differently, through connection to the finest about American history, similar to Christianity is best defended by reference to what makes it special and magnificent, specifically the model of the Savior. In all circumstances does it mean feigning the most damaging of both America and Christianity did not happen; it signifies both meekness and belief, a mixture that serious national faithful should embrace.
