Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such treatments need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become starving," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural management.
